Introducing Your Dog to His New Home

You’re bringing your pup home today.  How exciting!

Whether you’re bringing home a puppy or a rescue from a shelter, keep in mind that your new fur baby is entering a strange, new, exciting environment.  There’s so much to see, sniff, explore and discover!

Before you bring him in the house, make sure he has pottied.  If you have a back yard, walk him around it and take him to the area where you want him to eliminate.  Once you’re sure his “tank is on empty”, bring him in the house on-leash so you can walk him through the areas of your home that he’ll have access to.  Show him his crate, which should be set up in a room where he can see and hear what’s going on.  Everyone in the family should greet him calmly; they can even give him a treat.  Then put him in his crate with a couple of chew toys and let him settle in.

Go about your normal business, but remember to take him out to eliminate on a regular schedule.  Keep a log of his potty times to avoid accidents.  Playtime out of the crate after his walk should be supervised. Rule of thumb – a pup should not be left in his crate for several hours on end; the maximum time is his age plus 1.  For example, a three-month old pup should not be crated for longer than 4 hours at a time.  Less if possible until he’s housebroken.

Don’t expect him to automatically know the house rules.  You need to teach him house manners.  Manage his environment and eliminate temptation for getting into mischief by not leaving things like shoes, socks and remote controls within easy reach.  Children’s toys should also be kept out of reach, especially toys with small parts that can be ingested.  Instead, offer desirable chew toys such as Nylabones and Kongs filled with kibble or a few treats.  Remember, you want to set your pup up for success from the moment you bring him home.

If you haven’t consulted with a trainer, now would be a good time to do so.  Teaching your dog desirable behaviors early on will avoid behavioral challenges in the future.

Above all, enjoy all the love and joy a companion dog will bring to your life!
